The Policy Holder Group Number is a number assigned by the insurance carrier to the policy holder's insurance group. Some insurance carriers require the Group Number, while other carrier do not. For insurance purposes a group describes coverage of a number of individuals under one contract. The most common "group" is made up of employees of the same employer.
