The Provider Set National ID is the National Provider Identifier assigned to the provider by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandated the adoption of a standard unique identifier for health care providers. The NPI is frequently used when billing services for the provider.
